Who Is Barclay Hastings?
Barclay added herbal studies to his years of studies and practices in wellness and prevention. He completed Rosemary Gladstar’s Correspondence Course: The Science and Art of Herbalism. Following completion of the course he was mentored by one of Rosemary’s protégé, Emily Ruff, Director of The Florida School of Holistic Living with a focus on creating a sacred space and plant communication. Being mentored by Emily led to studies in Druidry and Native American nature based spirituality and herbal healing. These studies have led to an expanded consciousness to include the imaginal and spirit realm experienced through the elementals earth, water, fire and air. Barclay opened the Hedgerow School of Herbal Studies, with a hands on and a distant learning/mentoring focus using Rosemary’s course as the curriculum and supplementing with additional resources. The highlight of his herbal teachings is being invited to become one of Rosemary’s teachers.
Barclay retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a Lt. Col. following 30 years of service. His interest in herbalism stems from his subsequent 30 years of immersion in wellness and prevention. Following retirement and graduation from the University of Florida with a master’s degree in exercise science and wellness, Barclay co-founded the 3rd hospital based wellness program in the state of Florida at Naples Community Hospital. Concurrently he graduated from the University of Southern California with a masters in Systems and after six years relocated to Columbus, Ohio where he studied theology at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio. He earned a masters in addiction studies and counseling. He practiced in the field and has delivered workshops throughout the state of Ohio on Wellness and Recovery. He subsequently retired from the Ohio State University’s Addiction Medicine Program.
