Recently when I received an email that notified subscribers of the next offering of Rosemary’s Science and Art of Herbalism course. I couldn’t help but sneak a peek at what it looks like today. You see, I was a student of this course way back in the 1900’s – just prior to the dawning of computer technology, before cell phones even. We sent our lessons back and forth via US Mail!! (Yes, I have gray hair now. ) Memories of happily cooking up tinctures, infusions, poultices, and teas for the first time came flooding back. Most of these things are a regular part of life for me now, but I still get a bit of a thrill from creating great healing concoctions on my own, often from herbs I can pick from my own garden. At the beginning of our time together, I read somewhere – I think in the Forums – that this course is as much a spiritual journey as an educational one. I’m glad I stumbled on that because I’ve been in a spiritual crisis for a very long time and was looking forward to discovering what I might find. Today I was accepted by the American Herbalist Guild as a Registered Clinical Herbalist. I had no idea when I joined your program that I would end up making herbalism my profession! Thanks to your fantastic program I was able to have the skills I needed to continue my education which eventually led to getting my practitioners certificate through the Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine. I have had a herbal practice for just over two years now, and custom compound herbs in my on site, teach a 9-month herbalism class here in my local area, and am in the process of creating a community education herbal garden and food forest here in Los Angeles. I feel this course helped me gain a deeper understanding and use of these plants, and more importantly how to use them with confidence for my family. I also felt like my sons became more interested in some of the recipes and formulas I made. They asked questions and wanted to know what herbs helped certain ailments. I think I created a little spark of interest there! I love it when families are included, and children are learning along with their parents. Take them on herb walks especially. The plants the children learn in their childhood they never forget! They can make their own little herbariums….! Holly O says Home study is the only way I could have done this!
Prior to this course, I dreamed of being an herbalist, and read so many reference books on how to do it, but I did not feel “qualified” to mix my own teas to make anything more than elderberry syrup. If I found a very detailed recipe for something (like the elderberry syrup) then I would make it, but I never ventured out on my own and tried my own recipes. More than anything, this course has given me confidence to try making things. I did struggle with typing up the assignments, as there were some questions that felt so overwhelming to me. The staff that responded to my homework and questions were all very helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to make this course available via correspondence. At this point in my life, this is the only way I could have done this!

The Science & Art of Herbalism was my first ‘’structured’’ learning of herbalism. I feel this course gave me a really good basis on so many topics. It also open my eyes on new elements. Now I have a much better idea of what exists that I could explore further. Before this class, I wasn’t so confident making herbal products. Beside teas and capsules, I was buying everything else. I was amazed when I realized how easy it is to make a tincture or an ointment. This course has been definitely empowering for me. My library also filled up through the lessons. When I began this “green journey”, I was newly retired and had returned to my hometown after being away from it for 43 years. Both of these factors have required huge adjustments on my part.
